Abstract
Mites of the cohort Heterostigmatina are one of the cohorts classified in suborder Prostigmata which most of them are associated with animals and are parasite, fungivorous and or phytophage, usually found in surface layers of the ground. Heterostigmatic mites have been colonized primarily in non-soil niches and exhibited free-living way of life toward parasitism and parasitoidism. Family Pygmephoridae is one of member of this cohort. Mites of the family Pygmephoridae are free-living and fungivorous and generally exploit variety of insects for phoretic dispersal. This family includes at least 350 species and about 30 genera. The mite genus Pediculaster Vitzthum, 1931 is one of the largest in this family and includes about 100 described species in the world fauna and inhabit in a great variety of habitats. During 2012, sampling from some areas of Fars Province (southern Iran) was performed. In this survey, the mite Pediculaster rysanovy Samsinak, 1989 (Acari: Pygmephoridae) has been found on the body of the host fly (Diptera: Heleomyzidae). The hosts were collected by netting and transferred to vials containing alcohol. In the laboratory, separated mites, were cleared in lactophenol and mounted in Hoyer’s medium. Morphology of the mites was studied using a light microscope. This species is a new record for the mite fauna of Iran. Also, it is the second report of the species in the world. Meanwhile, this is a new host record for this mite. P. rysanovy َ has previously been reported from the host fly (Diptera: Sphaeroceridae) from Czech Republic. P. rysanovy is most similar to P. microsaniae Martin, 1978, however, solenidia on legs I and II are different in shape, and setae e are much shorter in the latter.
